What Is Robotic Hip Replacement?
Robotic-arm assisted hip replacement uses the Mako™ surgical system to precisely plan and execute implant placement. Before surgery, a CT scan of your hip is taken and used to create a 3D model of your unique anatomy. The surgeon plans the ideal implant position on this model before entering the operating room.
How It Works
During surgery, the robotic arm provides tactile feedback and boundaries that guide the surgeon within the pre-planned safe zone. If the surgeon moves outside the planned area, the robotic arm provides resistance. The system continuously tracks the position of the pelvis and femur in real-time, accounting for any movement.
Benefits
- Personalised planning — implant size and position are precisely determined from your CT anatomy before surgery
- Sub-millimetre accuracy — reduces risk of leg length discrepancy and component malpositioning
- Optimal alignment — correct cup position reduces dislocation risk and wear
- Reproducibility — consistent results regardless of intraoperative variability
Does It Change Recovery?
Recovery from robotic-assisted hip replacement is the same as conventional hip replacement. The primary benefit is greater precision, which is expected to translate to improved long-term implant survival and lower complication rates. Most patients are not aware of a difference in recovery compared to conventional surgery.
Availability
Mako™ robotic-arm assisted hip replacement is available at Eastwood Private Hospital. Not all patients require robotic assistance. Dr Mooney will discuss whether it is recommended for your individual case.
